The writer of X-Men talks about integrating his team into the major mutant event of the fall!

The fast-paced, organic evolution of writer Brian Wood’s X-MEN has made it a fan favorite over the past

four months. The only thing that comes close to matching the intensity of Wood’s X-MEN?  His enthusiasm for September’s 10-part X-Men: Battle of the Atom event.

Wood’s passion for Battle of the Atom and his part in it—writing X-MEN #5 and #6—permeates through this discussion of working alongside and learning from fellow event writers Jason Aaron and Brian Bendis. Along the way he reveals his ability to work in some great character moments amidst all of the Battle of the Atom action for Rachel Grey, Psylocke and Bling! plus much more.

Marvel.com:  Do you have an opportunity for some interaction between Rachel Grey and young Jean Grey in your Battle of the Atom issues?

Brian Wood: Absolutely; both from me and the other writers.

Marvel.com:  Can you elaborate on how the events connected to BOTA prompt the "cracks in the new all-female X-Men cast" to start to show? The team is made up of people of firm convictions and passions, so it should surprise no one that the potential for ever-increasing tension was there all along.

Brian Wood: Well, we've started that already in the first arc, when Rachel and Storm find themselves at odds over the decision involving Karima, Storm taking the practical route and Rachel the emotional one. I should remind people that this grouping isn't an official team in the pre-meditated sense; they came together to help Jubilee, so there's no clear hierarchy of leadership or defined roles. So they have to work it out if they want to stay together. I think that they think they have team potential, but maybe aren't there just yet.

There's also some significant "cracks" within the event story itself, which I am a little hesitant to detail in advance.

Brian Wood y Olivier Coipel ponen en marcha una formación exclusivamente femenina de La Patrulla-X

El escenario editorial de los mutantes en España se enriquece hoy con la incorporación de una nueva cabecera protagonizada exclusivamente por Mujeres X: Tormenta, Pícara, Psylocke y Júbilo. El cuarto volumen de X-Men, que alcanza esta semana el número 29, incluye desde este mes de agosto la nueva propuesta diseñada por el guionista Brian Wood, el dibujante Oliver Coipel y el equipo editorial marveliana representado por Jeanine Schaefer.

El planteamiento de esta nueva propuesta es original, y en el despacho mutante le han estado dando vueltas durante mucho tiempo. Pero ha sido finalmente la propuesta de Wood (autor también de The Massive) la que finalmente ha visto la luz. Como explica el escritor norteamericano, la primera vez que tomó contacto con las historias de los mutantes de Marvel fue durante la etapa en la que el dibujante Chris Bachalo dibujaba la serie Generación X (el siglo pasado, sí), y es por ello que tiene una especial querencia hacia los temas relacionados con los más jóvenes miembros de La Patrulla-X.

"Creo que es precisamente la variedad de temas que puedes tratar con estos personajes lo que está en el centro de lo mucho que significan para mi", explica Wood, "los temas de la identidad de los jóvenes, de proceso de maduración. La Patrulla-X está muy relacionada con la idea de la juventud de una manera que me lleva de manera automática hacia ese tema; cuando me paro a pensar en ideas para las series que quiero escribir, gravitan naturalmente hacia ahí. Aprecio mucho el trabajo de soap-opera que ofreció Claremont, por ejemplo, pero pienso que pueden convivir ambos planteamientos."

"Una parte de ser un chaval", añade Shaeffer, "es precisamente esa visión dramática de la vida, en la que todo el mundo es o un héroe, o un villano. En la que cada romance es el definitivo. En la que todo lo que haces es la mayor de las tragedias o la mayor de las historias de amor, y creo que eso es lo que conseguimos con La Patrulla-X."
