X-Men’s Excalibur Team Is Finally Coming Back!
By Nicholas Raymond

Excalibur, an offshoot of the X-Men that had their own series for a decade, is finally reforming after twenty years. Reuniting under their original leader, Captain Britain, the group will appear in X-Men Gold Annual #1. The cover and the synopsis indicates that Captain Britain and his wife, Meggan, have had a child off-panel.

After years of bringing into prominence younger and newer heroes, Marvel promised that the Marvel Legacy relaunch would put a renewed focus on the company’s classic characters. Over the past few weeks, Marvel has announced a number of changes that will help to restore the status quo of the Marvel Universe. Fans of X-Men comics will finally get Jean Grey back, as well as Wolverine and Professor X who were killed a few years ago. Adam Warlock, a key figure in Marvel’s biggest events in the ’90s, will be making a comeback in the pages of Guardians of the Galaxy, and Marvel’s three Avengers titles will be reshuffled under a single series.

Adding to the list of returning characters, Marvel has announced that Excalibur, a team of X-Men characters based in the UK, will reunite in X-Men Gold Annual #1. Written by Marc Guggenheim and Leah Williams, the issue will bring together original team members Captain Britain, Meggan, Nightcrawler, Prestige, and Kitty Pryde, who formed the team in 1988 at a time when the X-Men were thought to be dead. The cover is a recreation of the cover for Excalibur #1. Featured on both covers is an image of Widget, a floating robot head that took the original team on a journey through parallel universes.

Series editor Chris Robinson:

“Since the launch of ResurrXtion, fans have been wondering when the classic Excalibur team would come together again. With this Annual, Marc, Leah, and Alitha have painstakingly put together a love letter to them and the classic series we’re all still talking about!”

This January, get ready for an X-Men story so big, Marvel enlisted two superstar writers to bring it to life. Written by Marc Guggenheim (X-Men Gold) and Leah Williams (Secret Empire: Brave New World) with art by Alitha E. Martinez (Black Panther: World of Wakanda), the original Excalibur team will reunite for an exciting adventure that both long-time fans and new fans can enjoy. But getting the gang back together proves to have its own challenges…and who is the new Braddock bundle of joy?

Of the heroes shown on the cover, three of them (Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, and Prestige) are already on the roster of the “Gold” team. It’s unclear what will bring the three X-Men to London to meet with Captain Britain and Meggan, or if other Excalibur members will be involved. Another member of the “Gold” team, Colossus, joined Excalibur in 1995, and remained with them until the title was canceled in 1998. Other key members of Excalibur include Wolfsbane, Psylocke (Captain Britain’s sister), and Rachel Summers. New iterations of the team were formed in short-lived titles during the 2000s which added other heroes such as the Black Knight, Juggernaut, Dazzler, and Nocturne.

X-Men Gold Annual #1 goes on sale in January.
